The AJHL (Alberta Junior Hockey League) has been going strong for 50 years in the province, nowadays being a premiere league. AJHL hockey teams are quite spread out with teams in the far North, but also spread throughout the South. This creates some of the longest road trips in Junior A hockey.

For scholarships, AJHL hockey provides more opportunities for quality scholarships than other leagues, and it also produces NHL draft-picks every year. If a player is looking to go the NCAA route, he’ll definitely be watched in this league by top schools. Additionally, players who want to keep local or who return from the Western Hockey League have ample opportunity to land with ACAC teams in the province upon completion of their junior careers.

Rinks in the Alberta Junior Hockey League vary from city facilities with few fans, to the larger arenas of the North and the barns in the South. Team budgets in this league vary but most teams treat players well, providing all the necessities. Out of province players do come to this league, but a great number come from within the AMHL.

Traditionally, the league holds training camp a week earlier than most leagues. In part, this could be due to the longer winter break the league takes between Christmas and the New Year.
